Ron Carúpano is made at Hacienda Altamira in the Macarapana Valley outside Carúpano on Venezuela's Caribbean coast, an estate founded in 1762 by Spanish captain Félix del Fierro and today home to Destilería Carúpano, one of the brands recognized under the Ron de Venezuela appellation created in 2003. The rums are made with spring water from the Chuare River and blended by Carmen López de Bastidas, Venezuela's first master blender, who has run the house's cellars since 1990. Reserva Especial 6 is the entry point of the range: rums aged up to six years in sealed white American oak barrels, with the annual angel's share never topped up, bottled at 40% ABV. The distillery describes it as light amber with orange glints, with white flowers, molasses, caramel, a touch of saltiness and a little wood on the nose, and a balanced palate of molasses, raisins and nuts with a pleasant salinity that is a signature of this coastal distillery. It is built for mixing rather than contemplation: the house's own serves are two measures in a tall glass with a squeezed lemon wedge and cola, or over ice with tonic water.
